WHY Y?

Section Y

AAAS Section on General Interest

Section Y was originally established by the AAAS for those members whose primary interest is in one or more of Science Journalism, Science Administration, or activities of the State/Regional Academies of Science. Members with strong interests in the state science and technology programs that have evolved in the last decade also have a natural home here. The section title is the only way to describe the diverse scientific interests that exist within each of these subgroups. We also have AAAS affiliated organizations as members.

The principle of accomodating such diversity also allows us to provide a haven for those AAAS members whose interests are interdisplinary even if not in the areas of emphasis above. Thus, we may provide a fellow route, or AAAS meeting session organizing opportunity, for members whose research can not be properly judged by any other single section. We urge such AAAS members to affilate with Section Y as their primary section.

We welcome any member of AAAS to affiliate with Section Y as one of their three sectional choices. Section Y provides an opportunity for AAAS members to show their general interest and broad perspectives in science and engineering.

At its annual meeting the section generates initial proposals for sessions of interdisplinary interest. Individual members then work on these proposals under the sponsorship of the section. The officers also remain alert for sessions from other sections that we may co-sponsor. As an example, our represenative to the Education Section looks for proposed sessions from them that are of general interest to our members.
